Agree, I have always been of the opinion that Pimax think that we need to focus out toward the canted screens (not straight ahead), which may cause eye strain and incorrect IPD for many people. If you measure to the center of the Fresnel lenses, it is way larger then what is being displayed on screen.
Thanks for posting. It shows how difficult it is to make good through the lens coverage.
Thank you
I hope me too

I dont know why people calling them “Helmets” bothers me so much. I recently have been speakimg with a friend, attempting to get im into VR. He told me
“when a VR Helmet are light enough to watch an entire movie without being uncomfortable i’ll think about it”
His usage of the term Helmet, made me think that his vision of VR is this.
instead of this
Helmets are for playing Hockey, and if this is the conception that the masses still have of VR then we have a problem.
Aah, one of those rare delightful occasions where I am on 100% the same wavelength as you.
when have we not seen eye to eye?
Yes I have a big problem with people calling a VR HMD a Helmet.
A Helmet is what you wear when you go riding on your motorcycle.
Haven’t checked the last Pitool, but can remember there was a Helmet reference in there.
The most scary part of the first picture is not the size for me, it’s the Green LED Bar that looks alot like Pimax’s
Yeah, a helmet is worn for protection. Im sure the Pimax would crumble if you threw a peanut at it.
vive can stop a bullet. lol
Just tried… still intact although I almost hesitated just before I was about to throw the peanut at my already cracked 5K+
edit: Peanut still intact as well, so I guess it’s a tie😁
Sorry for the thread hijack.
You wouldn’t know: While a hypothetical forum reader who had taken any notice of my writing may have gotten an impression I’m rather aggressive, it actually takes a lot of… truth bending, to draw a negative unasked-for reaction from me, and I believe I almost never chime in on subjective matters, which would be the various cases here. :7
Just a precaution… be sure to modify this value for the 8K-X
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\SteamVR\resources\settings\default.vrsettings
maxRecommendedResolution
Set the value to 16384 as per sweviver instructions. Otherwise the render resolution may not be as effective as it should. This is the safest “forget-about-it-after-setting” to use. Try it and see if you no longer get any aliasing as you were mentioning before.
Sorry guys, had a busy few days.
On the bright side, I’ve just modded the HMD to sport the DAS speaker from my original Vive setup (I’ve been using these with my 5k+ anyway), here is the process:

Elite Dangerous is now on a completely different level! Btw, the visuals of Elite on an 8k-X are from another world… literally! Absolutely stunning, and the black levels are completely ok (I get nice blacks on the dark side of planets but of course the galactic background is full of dust, I’m now considering a mod like this: Amazingly Realistic Immersion Mod | Frontier Forums
Hello Mr Milopapa
I have a little question
I saw that you have tested Dcs world where I also pilot, a small question:
-In the cockpit you see an image of what kind of quality comparing it to a flat screen PC:
-1080p full HD
-1440p
-2160p
And in the cockpit again you see an image of what quality compared to our 5k +?:
-Image more beautiful
-Beautiful image
- AMAZING 4k image.
Thank you in advance .
Laurent

How do you feel about the color/contrast? I’ve seen a few people comment about muted colors elsewhere on the internet. Can you compare it to another headset?
Hi Laurent,
I haven’t flown DCS on a monitor for many years, so I can’t really compare but I have this to say: with the 8k-X, I no longer feel handicapped compared to monitor users.
In general though, I think the resolution feeling is on par with my 1440p 27" monitor (I don’t have 4k monitor to compare to, except my home theater projector - and the images of 4k content on the 8KX is remarkable similar to the 4k projector).
A friend tried the 8k-X last week, and he also kept saying (especially when playing Elite Dangerous, one of his favourite games): “it’s just like on the monitor!”.
The image quality compared to a a 5k+ is simply a lot crisper, with no SDE at all. If I had to pick from your list, I’d go with the AMAZING 4k image - just to emphasize how clear it is.
Keep in mind that with the current sh*tty core optimization (or lack of), you simply can’t push the 8K-X to its full potential in DCS - I still see aliasing on edges, but I can’t raise the resolution without going into reprojection (which I try to avoid at all costs).
Sadly, even a 3090 won’t be much help there when the CPU frametime alone can reach 14+ ms - the GPU simply has no chance to render the image under 13ms.
I don’t even play DCS, but have you tried turning off Hyper-Threading? That should boost your individual thread performance a bit. I think it’s on the order of ~15%, depending on the particular CPU model.
I’ve had the original Vive - that had better colours, obviously.
The colors feel very similar to the 5K+: maaaybe a little deeper blacks but it’s hard to tell as the brightness slider in Pitool 262 crushes all colors, so not a real backlight control.
First thing I did when I overclocked my 8086k was to turn off hyperthreading. My build is for VR simulators mainly, and there I benefit greatly from the 5.3Ghz clockspeed with HT off.
Alternatively, you can get quite some performance boost for DCS by setting it to physical cores only with something like Process Lasso.
