Thanks Andrew. Are you running ACC btw? I tried last night and the menu screen is literally 180 degrees behind me. Resetting to center doesn’t seem to work.
Is the distortion pretty much all but gone when playing AC using the Large FOV? Or is it still there? How much has it decreased over time?
I have not. I do think the distortion is app sensitive. I see a large amount of distortion in SteamVR home yet in AC, if it’s there, it’s not perceptible. It’s something Pimax team should continue to focus on.
Thanks for the reply. That’s good to know. I’d rather have to deal with distortion in SteamVR than in Assetto Corsa, where I plan on spending most of my time driving.
not true, MSAA x8 works perfect in AC
@robertr1
here are my quite advanced suggestion to setup AC for Pimax 5k

First I’d like to thank you for guide Yata_PL. I did not know of that content manager and I like it very much. Using your settings, but have to use lower steamss because of my 1080ti. I’m not completely happy with far away clarity. It gets muddy. I’m going to try to not use MSAA and see if this helps. My preference is clear and crisp visuals and I used to run asseto with low AA on my Samsung odyssey.
Well, in my opinion, its even too sharp when you activate DX 10 support and change parametr: lode bias -1. Try it. Everything is explained in video.
I need to go over settings again then, might have crept in a mistake or something. Is there a setting in NVCP or content manager you think might be the obvious culprit?
I do have to run a bit lower steamSS so that would be my first bet.
I run AC at:
PT 2.0, no Smooth, no PP, 72Hz Normal fov
Content Manager: World Max, MSAA 8, AF 16, mirrors high, shadows 512 smoke off. post process off
I leave Steam to decide on it’s own.
Seems clear enough to me. Benches 72 fps solid. Hong track is stunning. My favorite sim.
Hmm just to clarify. When I speak of far away details I think for example on turn 11 on spa. When you do that left turn and stop the car you can look all the way to the start/finish line and the pit complex. Do you get a clear and defined view of those buildings from standing in/right after turn 11?
“clear and defined” is such an arbitrary definition in VR. I certainly can’t compare it to a 4K monitor as I have never had one, In fact I don’t believe I have ever played AC outside of VR.
From the stand point of my ability to determine distant detail IRL, I would say it’s comparable to my normal vision so it seems about right as far as game graphics and VR go. From the standpoint of my Oculus Rift at SS 1.8 it’s head and shoulders above that first gen headset. Looking at the farthest buildings from the top of the hill on pit row, they look about as clear as I would see them IRL which in VR is really nice.
Taking another title such as New York City in Aerofly FS2, when I look toward Central Park from above the World Trade Tower the distant objects again look about as clear as I would expect to see them IRL.
I also run a 1080ti. 2 things that I don’t run are Pitool smoothing (causes artifacts and blurring) and I let Steam VR handle SS automatically. Playing with too many SS methods at once is counter-productive imo and it is unknown whether multiple settings in multiple places is additive or injurious in some games.
Be curious to know what your steam rendering defaults to when setting PiTools @ 2.0
Agreed on smoke. It’s useless and exaggerated in AC and never adds to the immersion. Just eats up CPU/GPU resources esp at the start of a race.
If I recall SteamVR recommends 18% at Pitool 2 but bottoms out at 20%
Is there any advantage of running Pitools at 2.0 instead of keeping it at 1.0 and using steamvr as the SS method?
Try it and determine what you think.
My perception is unique to my eyes, my brain and my hardware including a set of 5K+ panels I feel look as good blacks as my Rift.
As far as supersampling goes, SteamVR, Nvidia drivers and Pimax software and firmware are all moving targets so I tend to use the software being written by the guys that made the hardware rather than complicate things that are in flux.
As far as AC goes, I am happy as a pig in poop with it’s look and performance on my hardware.
Even though my AC runs great and maintains max fps, the thing I find annoying and making it seem slightly less than ideal was the extreme head shaking.
I went into c:/user/****/documents/assetto/corsa/cfg/camera_manager.ini and changed all the entries to 0.
Others may prefer the shake, but I like the additional smoothness myself for what it’s worth.
