My 5k+ was shipped today, but I can’t afford a new graphics card at the moment. My PC is otherwise pretty up to date (8700k, 32gb), but I won’t be able to afford an RTX for months. Are any games at all playable on a GTX 980? I don’t have any lighthouses (coming from a Rift) so I could only play sit-down, gamepad-driven experiences anyway for the time being. Thanks.
I heard that Skyrim seems pretty ok on a 980ti…
Im in the same boat BTW…
Still have the 980 but gonna upgrade as soon as possible…
I hate to say it man, but a 980 is going to have a hell of a time. See about getting a 1080 TI (rather than RTX) much better value for the money.
I think bigscreen, aircar, and a couple smaller experiences might run ok (beat saber will,) but a new card is pretty much required until they get ASW working.
It’s not about the money … It’s more about no available watercooled 2080ti in Germany…
Oh, alrighty then. Based on the new Battlefield V ray tracing benchmarks, the 2080 TI is a lemon at what is supposed to be its signature feature.
120 hz with RTX off, 30-60 hz with it on. Its pretty bad honestly.
If RTX was full blown path tracing (like Otoy’s brigade engine) for photoreal graphics, I would find that acceptable. For shadows and reflections? Hell no!
Yeah have already seen it … pretty devastating. …
Im still debating with myself to just get a 1080ti …
My HMD should come very soon too … Nr < 280 …
All the benchmarks seem to indicate that 1080TI is better than 2080 as it pertains to VR. The extra 3 gigs of vram are also helpful.
I know the 2080TI is disappointing, but I still think in for a penny, in for a pound. May as well get the best available, especially since I’ll use the CUDA cores for work, and it might have possibilities for AI work.
Have never even wasted a thought about the 2080…
That’s just wasting money …
Im still pretty sure I’m gonna go with the 2080ti …
I just need a watercooled card for my loop …
But they arent available yet…
The raytracing in the 20series cuts fps in half.
My reccommendation is wait & see what amd is bringing to the table. Nvidia from what I hear might be in trouble.
The 980 should be able yo run some games. Depending on settings may do alright as long as one doesn’t think games that are excesdively demanding. Ie hellblade etc.
@Bertram from what I hear Amd will be bringing some decent affordable gpus next year. There is never harm in trying what you have & until you have the headset sometime to save for eventual upgrade.
To date we have had users with success test 1060 6g & 980ti with decent results. Just keep in mind tweaking will be key.
I myself & I don’t reccommend it have even had some successes with trying my old r9 390 8g.
You might even find a 1080 on cheap used as some will clear there old cards to make way for lottery winnings… Er I mean 20series cards.
