8KX High Res/FOV is Moot if the 3D Depth is Lacking

As it is for SDE, distortion, black levels and all the other things people see differently. I recall the occasional post in the frontier forum where people couldn’t see the depth effect at all.

I actually see depth better in VR than real life, at least for nearby stuff. I frequently (accidentally) hit dishes on the edge of the counter in the kitchen, when loading the dishwasher.

I never noticed it before Pimax introduced the Vertical Offset feature in PiTools, but apparently, my eyes don’t quite line up. Once I change my offsets to +5.5 and +8, the VR 3D effect became much more noticeable. Unfortunately, there’s a downside: Now in real-life, I sometimes notice that things don’t quite line up. The effect is more pronounced when I’m tired.

I think I’m experiencing something similar at times.

We need some optometrists in here. Pimax needs some optometrists on their team.

The more you read and follow the threads here, the more you realize that the design of these headsets is an almost impossible task. Every single major to minor thing, from comfort, to light bleed to counterweight needed to black levels to distortion to depth perception to … on and on and on (the list is almost never ending) … Every single one of these things is different for every single person!

Yes, we need to encourage pushing forward and pointing out potential problems, but we also need to realize that each one of us is a different human and we need to accept some trade offs based on our individual variations.

As somebody whose unfortunate combination of facial features, including low IPD and low prominent brow, conspires to make it impossible for me to wear any HMD I have ever tried, anywhere near optimally, and certainly not comfortably, and have had to invasively mod them all, to make my use of them halfway tolerable, I am acutely aware of the differences in physiology, and psycho-visual perception between different people.

I have also repeatedly had to explain to people ever since the Oculus kickstarter, that there are necessarily tradeoffs that needs to be made in just about every area of VR, so I believe I have some credibility as a realistic individual in that regard, as well.

That said: Yes, we need to take these things into account, but we must not fall into misusing them to sweep real matters of hard physics and engineering under the carpet.

Every single thing is not different enough to every single person, that you can discard all scientific knowledge, and use extreme relativism to excuse anything; Persons A and B not perceiving property X of a device identically, does not mean that an improvement to the property couldn’t benefit them both.

If we allow subjectivity to go so far as to supplant reality, propping up “alternative facts”, then we’re in a very bad place.

My final result is that I’ve decreased my hardware IPD by an additional 0.5 mm, which results in better in-game scaling and only minor eyestrain. Note that this is about 1 mm smaller than my measured IPD. It’s a good thing that my IPD is well inside the hardware IPD range.

True, but there is no distance control in pimax. This would probably make a big difference if it was added
