I read a lot of reviews/hands-on an watched videos on YouTube. It was always stated, that even a GTX980 can handle the 8k version well. My concern is, that the games that were played are things like ‚Fruit Ninja‘. I want to use the headset for simulations like Assetto Corsa or RaceRoom and I think they are more demanding. I have got a i7/GTX1080 spec and wonder, if I should go for the 5k with a lower image quality or for the 8k that is surely more hardware demanding. Can I trust in Brainwarp to handle a solid and high framerate with the 8k version for the named simulations. I know, no one has an experience with the simulations I wrote about, but perhaps there are some pro and con voices that can help me choosing the ‚for-me-right-version‘.
The base 8k model shares the same system specs as the 5k model
Both accept max input resolution of dual 1440p. The 8k however uses a scaler to upscale the 1440p/eye to 4k/per eye.
Has Pimax explained how it works?
What’s the point of a picture rendered at 1440p, upscaled to 4k, then displayed on a 1440p panel?
The 5k panels are 1440p each. The 8k model accepts 2x1440p input then upscales it to 2160p (4k). The 8k has 2x2160p (4k) panels.
8K version has two 4K panels inside, but takes the same input resolution as 5K version (2x 2560*1440). The only difference is that there is an upscaler in 8K version which takes lower resolution input and upscales it to 4K panels.
So for performance requirements both versions are the same. They expect the same input and render it over same FOV. From visual point of view, 8K version uses higher resolution panels so should technically have lesser SDE. Whether the upscaling makes the 8K picture more “fuzzy” than 5K version (which will show native input resolution) is yet to be seen once both HMDs are available.
8K in the end will sipport 3840x2160 resolution but you will be able to run it witl lower ress as well if your GPU is not good for higher VR performance.
But 8K will still have benefit from 4K display because 800 PPI vs 530 PPI on 5K model. In practice that mean 8K noSDE at all 5K still have SDE.
That is why you want 8K not 5K.
What about 5k sde?
I would like to see a picture of Assetto Corsa thru lens.
Thank you guys for the clarification. So it will be 8k for me. I just hope that a GTX1080 can handle the higher resolution than the Rift/Vive have got. But with the internal hardware upscaler I won’t need supersampling and this could end up with the same hardware demand!? I mean, with Assetto Corsa and Raceroom I use a 2.0 supersampling for my Rift and this I won’t need with the Pimax, right?
We have a few folks here with 1080s using the 4k model (1440p upscaledx1).
As the team has set min rec spec to 980ti/1070 you should be fine. In fact the team has been showcasing the prototypes with a veey nice laptop with a 1080 inside.
Hey Heliosurge,
Do you know something about BE isue 100$ discount? I want to apply for that but no officials answer my emails. Is it still applicable ?
There was a post in the forums. I beleive you make your pledge forva $100 less & email @deletedpimaxrep1.
Hopefully she can confirm or @Matthew.Xu.
Alternatively if the above works you could also have the credit applied towards base stations or controllers.
thanx, I will try to contact matthew.xu . Seems taht xunshu is busy or gone these days.
I do know they have been really busy getting thevnew prototype ready & scheduling the roadshows.
@bacon can likely help you as well with getting your BE discount applied.
